Tasmania’s Remotest Museum? A New Exhibition for the Kent Group Museum, Deal Island

It does take some effort to visit the Kent Group Museum on Deal Island. But for those willing to voyage into Bass Strait the Friends of Deal Island have been working with Arts Tasmania and the Roving Curator Program to develop a Collections Policy and Interpretation Plan,  resulting in the installation of a new exhibition earlier this year.

The Kent Group Museum is housed in the old Superintendent’s Cottage, which was built in 1846 and probably used by Charles Watson, and other engineers, for accommodation whilst employed in the construction of the Deal Island lighthouse.

Friends of Deal Island volunteers Shirley and Dallas Baker will talk about the islands and the idiosyncrasies of working with this unique museum. click on this link for more information August 2014 Maritime Museum of Tasmania Lunch Time Talk

Written by Tasmanian born Simon Barnard, the book is richly
illustrated on every page by Simon’s brilliant sketches.

The large format book  will undoubtable become the required volume
in libraries, private collections and certainly in Tasmanian schools
as the definitive  reference book regarding the convicts, their way
of life, their treatment, the buildings and generally conditions in
early Tasmania.

The illustrations are based on contemporary records that detail the
convict’s physical features such as height, hair colour and tattoos.
Other illustrations are drawn from architectural plans, written
descriptions and surviving artefacts.

Please RSVP either by email to pchs@westnet.com.au [1] or phone me on

Kind regards
