Textile Conservator
Judith Andrewartha Textile Conservator
What is Conservation?
Conservation activities may include preservation, restoration, examination,
documentation, research, advice, treatment, preventive conservation,
training and education www.aiccm.org.au
I am a member of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) and abide by their code of ethics. I have specialised in textiles.
What can I do for your object or collection?
- Surveys or in-depth individual reports for either one object or your entire collection. All surveys and treatments are accompanied by a full report with photographs, storage and display recommendations.
- Stabilisation of damaged textiles.
- Construct storage containers and assist with maintaining your collection.
- Construct mannequins with historically correct underpinnings for special pieces.
- Mount 3D and 2D objects for display.
- Advise on maintaining objects while on display. This will include support materials, lighting, environment, handling and cleaning.
- Develop a pest programme. Textiles are a great source of food and/or nesting place for bugs and nothing beats good housekeeping.
What have I done?
I began working as a conservator in 2000. I was responsible for all the textiles going on display when the National Museum of Australia opened in Canberra in 2001. After seven years I moved to the Australian War Memorial and then the Museum of Old and New Art, in Hobart. I’ve worked on a range of textiles from two thousand year old archaeological pieces, through 18th century costume to vehicles and contemporary art.
Prior to being a conservator I worked on various Community Arts projects, made Trade Union banners and taught at TAFE. I am a trained weaver and have worked with noted weaver, Jenny Turner. I have a Bachelor of Applied Science and and a Bachelor of Arts.
