Why Get Together?
Do you know that there are over 60 museums and historical societies in the southern region of Tasmania? Most are staffed by volunteers.
The Tasmanian Military Museum, Tasmanian Maritime Museum & Arts Tasmania’s Roving Curators invite you to the inaugural gathering of the Southern Museums Network.
Encouragement & morale:
Museums often work in isolation and don’t realise that other museums face similar problems. It’s good to be able to share your success stories with people who love museums as much as you do.
Sharing knowledge:
It’s an opportunity to see ‘how they did it’ through demonstrations or short talks. Develop a register of special skills like digitising collections, black-smithing or ship building to ‘loan out’ for workshops or special projects.
Inspiration:
A meeting over a cuppa might lead to a joint exhibition or ‘visitor trail’ between two museums. A visit to an exhibition opening might lead to a new idea about how to improve a display.
Invitation to Guest Speakers
Would you like to present a short talk on what your museum is up to, or tell us about a recent successful project?
If your museum is doing something you feel proud of, we would like to hear from you.
Possibilities include:
- Attracting and keeping volunteers
- A new exhibition
- Re-developing your museum
- New brochures and marketing
- Re-housing or cataloging your collection
Tell us what you did – and most importantly how you did it. Talks to go approximately 10 minutes – if you would like to use a projector and Power point to show us photographs etc., please let us know.
Please contact Roving Curator Elizabeth Adkins by phone on 0448 448 754 or email Elizabeth.adkins@arts.tas.gov.au if you would like to be involved, or for more information.
